7 Things To Do When You Have Nothing To Do

By  |

If you actually had to Google “what to do when you have nothing to do”, you must be looking at some serious free time. Either you genuinely have nothing to do, or you’re procrastinating something you really have to get done. Either way, there’s never actually “nothing to do”. There are plenty of ways to be productive in ways that don’t actually benefit you but are fun for the time being, as well as things you can do that are time consuming and actually valuable even after the day ends. No matter what your excuse is for having nothing else to do, here are the top 7 activities that you should spend the rest of your free time doing.

  1. Cook/Bake

Even bored people get hungry. If you have the time, use it to become your own personal chef by following a fun recipe you’ve always wanted to try. You can even make something as basic as chocolate chip cookies, but from scratch. Try over and over again until you get the perfect batch and then call it your secret recipe.

  1. Clean your room/basement/attic

Warning! More often than not, cleaning a room because you have a lot of free time leads to you reminiscing on old photos, clothes, knick-knacks, etc. and creating more of a mess than you had when you started. If you have a truly messy room, crank up the tunes or put your favorite Netflix show on in the background and get to work.

  1. Sell your old gift cards

If you have the chance to make money while doing virtually nothing, why wouldn’t you take it? While you’re cleaning that room of yours, look for gift cards that you either don’t want or are never going to use. Sites like GiftCash (https://giftcash.ca/) will actually pay you cash when you ship them your gift cards.

  1. Work with the weather

If it’s warm out, go for a walk or play a game of basketball with someone else who has nothing to do. You might as well make it a win-win by using your time to workout. If it’s snowy, make an igoo; cloudy, plant a garden; rainy, well you may be out of luck.

  1. Start a new Netflix series

If you’re one of those people who claim to have already watched everything on Netflix, well then this whole having-nothing-to-do problem isn’t just a problem for you, it’s a chronic condition. There’s always something new on Netflix, and even if it’s not new, there’s some great old shows like Friends or It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

  1. Read a book

Reading a book may not sound appealing to everyone, but if you find the right book, reading can actually be fun. Find your interest whether it be romance, mystery, business, self-help, or even biographies. Once you figure out what it is that can keep you flipping the pages, you’ll be reading for hours without even realizing you’re doing something studious.

  1. Get crafty

Crafts are another activity that’re not for everyone, but similar to reading, if you find what it is you are interested in, anyone can be an artist. You don’t have to draw or paint, but instead learn to knit, take cool photos, create a mosaic, or make your own candle. All things crafty can be found at stores like Michael’s or Hobby Lobby. Honestly, you could probably spend your day just wandering around those stores and never get bored.

  1. Get in a good workout

Working out is a great way to spend your time, especially if the alternative is you lounging on your couch. Not only is it something you essentially need to do in order to remain healthy, but it also makes you feel better about yourself.

There’s always something to do even when there’s nothing to do. Instead of wasting a perfectly good day, do something you’ve always wanted to do or that you should’ve done a long time ago.
